Michael Hutak is a career media professional who has worked extensively for nearly two decades with leading Australian and international media organisations and peak intergovernmental and humanitarian organisations.

Michael’s career traverses print, broadcast and digital. He has reported and edited sections and columns for major daily and weekly newspapers; edited and managed monthly and quarterly magazines; designed and maintained websites and consulted on on-line strategy and information management; produced and presented on-air reports for national television; and devised and implemented public information campaigns which have attracted nationwide media coverage; designed and maintained niche market blogs for a range of clients.

Since 2003, Michael has been consulting to peak intergovernmental and humanitarian organisations such as the United Nations World Food Programme, the Food and Agriculture Organisation, UNICEF and the One Laptop Per Child project.

In 2006, Michael was appointed Communications Specialist to the Inter-agency Task Force on the Ending Child Hunger and Undernutrition Initiative, which is a global partnership between such peak private sector, civil society and intergovernmental organisations as WFP, UNICEF, the World Bank, the Gates Foundation and the World Economic Forum.

Major media clients have included News Corporation, Agence France-Presse, Australian Associated Press, Australian Consolidated Press, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, John Fairfax and Pacific Publications.

As a journalist, Michael’s writing has been published in The Australian, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, The Sun-Herald, The Australian Financial Review, The Bulletin, Australian Style, Australian Art Collector, The Independent Monthly and many other titles. For nearly nine years Michael was a columnist and critic for Australia’s highest circulation newspapers, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Sun-Herald. He has also performed demanding roles in newspaper editorial production, working as a copy editor, “check-sub”, copy-taster and “rewrite” person for peak mastheads such as The Sun Herald, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian Financial Review, and The Daily Telegraph.

Michael’s digital and online experience extends (way back!) to the mid 1990s, when, as head of interactive for Gadfly Media, Michael was a senior consultant to the team that managed content for www.olympics.com, the official site of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and then the world’s most visited website.

Michael has also reported widely on the visual arts scene and the international art market. In 1997, he was appointed founding editor of Australian Art Collector, a role he held for five years taking the magazine from launch to the market leader position in Australian arts publishing. Michael is also an award-winning film-maker and a visual artist with several solo and group exhibitions and more than 20 film titles to his credit. In 2001 he wrote and produced the “Art Biz” segment for ABC Television’s national arts program, Coast to Coast. Since 2001, he has been the art market analyst and contributing art critic for The Bulletin, Australia’s oldest, most respected news magazine, until its closure in 2007.
Michael and his partner, editor and journalist, Jodi Thiessen, have three children: Romy, Ava and Zephyr.
